Q. What are the most common injuries among padel players and what are the main causes?
"Padel players often experience common injuries such as back pain, knee pain, elbow pain, and shoulder pain. These typically fall under tendonopathies, tendinitis, and repetitive strain conditions. Notable examples include padel elbow, jumper's knee, rotator cuff issues, and Achilles tendinitis.
These injuries are generally caused by overloading structures that lack the capacity to handle the stress. A holistic approach, focusing on effective movement and overall body strength, is crucial in addressing these conditions."
Q. What preventive measures can padel players take to reduce the risk of injuries?
"To minimise injury risk, it's essential to complement padel play with a consistent strength training programme. Strength training significantly reduces injury risk and enhances sports performance.
Additionally, incorporating specific movements to address areas like chronic stiff hips and backs can improve access to necessary positions during play.
A thorough warm-up is vital to reduce muscular strains and pulls, ensuring adequate blood flow and circulation, and preparing the body for the game's demands."
Q. How important is pre-match warm-up and what specific exercises do you recommend to prevent injuries?
"A pre-match warm-up is crucial and should include three key components:
Increase Heart Rate: Engage in activities that boost circulation and warm up muscles, such as lunges with twists, leg swings, arm swings, and squats.
Enhance Coordination: Perform padel-specific drills with a partner to challenge hand-eye coordination and prepare for the game.
Personal Joint-Specific Exercises: Tailor exercises to your body's unique needs, focusing on shoulder mobility, strength banded rotations, rotator cuff work, hip openers, knee prep, and calf prep."
Q. How important is it to use the right equipment, like a suitable racket, to reduce the chances of injury?
"Using the right equipment is fundamental in managing injuries. Proper footwear for the court surface can reduce the risk of slips, trips, and sprains, while efficiently absorbing forces into the lower limbs.
Padel rackets come in three main shapes: round, diamond, and teardrop. Round rackets offer better control for beginners, diamond-shaped rackets provide more power for advanced players but may increase arm strain, and teardrop rackets offer a balance of power and control for intermediates.
Choosing a racket with an ergonomic grip and tailored weight balance can help mitigate common padel-related injuries like tennis elbow. It's advisable to try different rackets at your club or seek professional racket fittings to find the best match for your playing style."
Q: How can OUR readers GET IN TOUCH WITH you for a consultation or further advice?
