Q: Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your experience as a physiotherapist, especially in relation to padel?
"My name is Brent Gilpin, also known as The Padel Physio. I'm a specialist physiotherapist with a background in helping athletes solve performance issues and get out of pain. With over 12 years of experience, I’ve had the opportunity to work in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, focusing on junior development and pro tennis players while in NZ.
I discovered padel just over a year ago and immediately fell in love with the game. It consumed me with the attributes an athlete needs to play well. Since then, I've been working with a mixture of tournaments and brands to support some of the country's elite players. This year will be huge for my involvement in the sport, as I have a catalogue of content, events, and plans for developing background support in padel.
Not only am I supporting some of our country's best players, but I'm also building a catalogue of resources to help the avid player in performance, injury prevention, and recovery."
Q: What are the key motor characteristics of padel that make it accessible to people of all ages and physical conditions?
"As a specialist physiotherapist working with padel players, it's clear that padel's key motor characteristics make it accessible to individuals of all ages and physical conditions. One of the primary factors is its emphasis on quick reflexes and agility over explosive power. The court's smaller size compared to tennis reduces the need for long sprints and allows players to focus on short, dynamic movements that are less taxing on the joints.
Padel also encourages balance and coordination. The underhand serve and volley-focused gameplay, relying on spatial awareness and strategic placement rather than sheer force, promotes a more subdued impact on the body. This makes it less likely to result in high-impact injuries, which is particularly beneficial for older players or those recovering from past injuries.
Furthermore, padel fosters cardiovascular fitness with its constant, but controlled, movement, making it an excellent form of aerobic exercise that enhances endurance without severe joint stress. The sport's flexibility in accommodating various skill levels allows for adaptations in technique and style, ensuring that players can participate at their own comfort and capability levels.
Lastly, the social aspect of padel, often played in doubles, encourages consistent participation while providing a fun and engaging way to maintain physical fitness, making it a sport where inclusivity blends seamlessly with health and well-being."
Q: What physical and mental benefits can a person expect from playing padel regularly?
"Racket sports, including padel, significantly enhance physical health and longevity by improving cardiovascular function, muscle strength, and coordination. Recent research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found these sports can reduce all-cause mortality risk by around 47%, compared to non-participants, due to their vigorous aerobic demands and strategic engagement, supporting both physical and mental well-being.
Like many physical activities, playing padel reduces stress levels by releasing endorphins, which are natural mood elevators. The strategic nature of the game enhances mental acuity, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, improving cognitive function.
The social aspect and exercise involved help in improving mood and combating depression and anxiety. As skills improve and fitness increases, self-esteem and confidence are boosted. Regular physical activity like padel promotes better sleep patterns and improves the quality of sleep.
Playing padel often involves interaction with others, fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of loneliness, building social connection. By promoting physical fitness and mental well-being, padel offers a holistic approach to a healthier lifestyle!"
